ATPA/ATPDEA is Scheduled to Expire on June 30, 2007
June 7, 2007

The Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA), as amended by the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA), is scheduled to expire June 30, 2007, unless extended (see below for details).

(ATPA affords preferential tariff treatment to most products of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.)

ATPA/ATPDEA for Colombia, Peru Could Be Extended for Additional Six Months if Their FTAs are Approved

Public Law 109-432, which amended and extended ATPA/ATPDEA through June 30, 2007, allows an additional six-month extension (until December 31, 2007) for a beneficiary country if the U.S. Congress and the beneficiary country's legislature both approve their free trade agreement by June 30, 2007. (The U.S. has FTAs that are pending enactment with Peru and Colombia.)

ATPA/ATPDEA Could Also Be Extended by Legislation

ATPA/ATPDEA could also be extended beyond its June 30, 2007 expiration date if legislation to extend it is enacted.
